Registering for Wedding Gifts

Registering for wedding gifts is something many couples forget to do. In the hectic planning stages, it is easy to overlook it. But signing up for a bridal registry is crucial.
Buying a wedding gift is a very difficult task. Unless you know the bride and groom very well, it’s hard to anticipate what they would want, what they could use, what they might already have, and what they really need.
You can make the job easier for your friends and family by registering. When you go in to register for your wedding, you will be able to choose a number of gifts you’d like to receive. You can tell your friends and family where you’ve registered, and they can go shopping at that store for gifts. They will be able to see what you’ve registered for, and the store will keep track of what has already been purchased so there are no duplicates.
You may prefer to be surprised with what you receive, but just remember that you’re not doing any favors for yourself or your family. They want to get you something you can really use and that you’ll both really enjoy. If the two of you detest coffee, it would be very sad if you received a coffee pot, and even more so if you received two or three!
Besides, not everyone is likely to shop at the place you register with. Some people may not like that store, or they may be from out of town, or they may just have something very specific in mind for you.
But registering is one way to be sure that you’ll get at least a few things that you really need and want. You’ll be able to help out those people who just don’t know what to get you, and you’ll be doing yourselves a favor in the process!
So don’t forget to set up your bridal registry. And be sure to choose a variety of gifts for all budgets. You may prefer more expensive gifts, but do remember to be kind to those whose budgets may not allow a more expensive purchase.

American Culture Dinner Talk Journal
It is a tragedy that traditional family values have fallen by the wayside from so many homes across the county. There are many reasons for this, the main one being that families are just to busy to partake in activities that just don’t seem important to them any more. We live in a society where family life is not spent together and the when it is it usually involves sitting around a television or a games console.

Some Things You Need to Know About Wedding Gifts
Posted: Oct 23, 2010 |Comments: 0

There are still some questions raised, about giving wedding gifts, here are most of them. A wedding invitation arrives and with it is information of the store and their wish list in bridal registry, where the couple listed gifts that they would like to receive. What shall the guest do if they are not planning to attend the wedding?
If you do not plan to attend the wedding celebration, it’s ok not to buy gifts, but it will be nice, if you send one , whether you’re attending or not.
If you receive a wedding invitation with the couple’s bridal registry wish list, it doesn’t mean that you need to buy the wedding gifts listed there. Although it would be a favor for the couple to get what they wished for it doesn’t mean that your gift is not as valuable to them.
Helping the couple out by buying wedding gifts that they can use for the wedding celebration like, providing for the wedding cake, floral arrangements, wedding souvenirs, wedding cufflinks and so on. Is equally welcome and will be cherished by the couple.
Choosing a memorable wedding gift can be hard sometimes but there are a lot of options on how you can achieve it. One of them is personalizing your gift, you can choose to put the bride and grooms name and the date of celebration on the gift itself like the , Cake Servers, Unity Candles, Toasting Flutes, a pair of pens, hankies , ring bearer pillow, cake tops, wedding cufflinks etc. But this is not meant as a surprise wedding gift, you need to consult the couple if they have already provided for this, otherwise the gift will be useless on the wedding day. So it would be better if you ask them or let them choose the items themselves.
Regarding online shopping, it would be the easiest and most convenient way to choose a gift for the bride and the groom. There are thousands of possible wedding gifts ideas that can be seen online. Plus you will have a lot of time to think things over before doing the actual purchase. The bride and the groom can actually participate on this if you want them too.
Bringing the wedding gift in the wedding venue is not recommended, first of all, it is not secured and the couple or their family doesn’t have any time to spare in making the gifts secure. So sending the wedding gift to the couple’s residence is recommended. If a couple plans to give each other a wedding gift, this should be given after they are presented as a couple and before lighting the unity candle.
There couples who wants to give something special to their respective children in the blended family setting. It would make them feel special if you welcoming them is a part of the wedding program. It would make the occasion special.

How To Get The Wedding Gifts You Want
As with most aspects of a wedding there is an “etiquette” to receiving gifts, and these rules are as basic as the manners we all learn as small children. It is not polite to ask for a gift and one must be sure to say “thank you” when someone gives them something. Unfortunately, it seems that these basic principles have been long forgotten when it comes to planning a wedding. Today many couples are asking, “how can we get money as wedding gifts?” First and foremost it is NEVER, under any circumstance, appropriate for a couple to ask for money as a gift. Couples should not “plan” on getting money or certain gifts, but one helpful way that couples can assist their guests with the process of giving and themselves receiving is by using a bridal registry. A bridal registry is a way of communicating what the couple would like to receive.
News of where a couple is registered should be passed along by word of mouth from close friends and family members and never included with the wedding invitation.
The Bridal Registry
The bridal registry is a free service offered by most department and specialty stores used as a vehicle through which a bride and groom can tell guests exactly what they need and want. The couple chooses the items they would most like to receive and when gifts are purchased from the registry it is recorded so people can tell what has or has not been purchased. The advantages are obvious, those buying the gifts do not have to struggle with what to get, and the couple does not have to spend a lot of time after the honeymoon returning duplicates or items not compatible with their home decor or lifestyle.
Registering should begin as soon as the engagement is announced. Most couples register at two or more places. The bride and groom should check around to find the department or specialty stores that have the patterns and styles of goods they want. Couples should also consider where most of their guests will be able to shop when they buy their gifts. Some stores now provide nationwide registry information through a chain of store locations or via the Internet.
Both the bride and groom should register; after all, they are both going to live with the gifts they are given. The couple should register for as much as possible. Many couples feel uncomfortable doing this, but they should not. The more items they register, the easier it will be for guests to shop for gifts without duplications.
Registering
Registries exist in a variety of places. Most commonly, people will register at department or specialty stores for housewares and other home accessories. Hardware, camping gear and sporting goods have joined the list as non-traditional registry items. Other unique options include a honeymoon registry through the couple’s travel agent, where guests can give money toward the actual honeymoon. Some furniture stores also offer similar registries.
After shopping around and the decision of where to register is made, the store’s registry department should be called to find out the best time to go in. Weekend afternoons and sale days should be avoided, and a minimum of an hour should be set aside for the excursion. Keep in mind that all decisions don’t have to be made on the first trip. It is very common for couples to make two to three visits to the store before their final choices are selected.
Depending on the store, a sales associate may assist the couple in registering, even setting up place settings to see how the crystal, china, flatware and linens complement one another. Other sales associates may simply provide a special scanner, explain how to operate it and leave the shoppers to browse and make their selections. Whatever process is used, in the end a record of items desired will be available to anyone requesting the couple’s registry information. From that point on, whenever someone buys a gift and indicates that it is for that couple, the store will mark that item off as purchased. It is wise to check in with the registry periodically to keep the people there informed about any gifts that are received early.
In the end, couples must remember that use of a bridal registry will not prevent some duplication or eliminate all hassles. Not everyone will shop through a registry, so be prepared to be tolerant.
Better to Give Than to Receive
As more couples are getting married at a later age in life, many are finding they already have everything they need and prefer not to receive gifts. Couples who find themselves in such a situation may declare “no gifts” or may ask that their guests donate money to a certain charity in lieu of a gift. This generous gesture not only keeps the couple from receiving many items they may never use, but it can also go a long way in helping others!
Thank You
No matter what type of gift is given, a “thank you” is always necessary. Be sure that as gifts are opened it is immediately recorded what was received and from whom. Thank you’s should be sent as soon as possible after the gift is received, generally within two to three weeks. Even if the person has already been thanked in person, a written note is still a must. A thank you note should include mention of what the gift is and if it’s appropriate, its usefulness, along with the appreciation of it. In the case of money the amount should not be mentioned, but how it is planned to be used may be included.

Bridal Registry
Who invented the idea of a bridal registry? This was first done many years ago in a Chicago based department store which first offered it to newly wed couples. A lot of retailers got hooked on the idea and almost everyone is doing it from the electronics store to the ones selling accessories for home improvement.
Most department stores offer this service. The engaged couple will just select the desired items from the selling area and the sales clerk will take note of everything. The representative can even help select some if the lovers are unsure of which item to get.
Some couples do not only register in one store. Some have done it in several ones especially when the brand that the lovers’ want is not available in one place and is only available in the other.
A great way which will serve as a guide for which items to get for the bridal registry will be to think of the items that will be needed in the new home. This should match the color of the walls so it is able to blend in with the surroundings.
Other items, which may be needed in the last minute, can also be done by the store. After all, those who are counting the days done will be stressed out worrying about the other details.
When this is finished, the engaged party should inform family and friends about it to avoid getting a similar item as a wedding gift. This is usually done by having this printed on the invitation.
If the couple is close to those attending the event, it wouldn’t hurt to do this by saying it up front. The same answer can be given to those who decide to ask.
Guests who are looking for a gift will be escorted around by the sales clerk explaining which items are the only ones left that have not been selected. If nothing is within the budget of those who want to buy a gift, the store can suggest giving a gift certificate instead as the present.
There are some who find the idea of a bridal registry offensive. This is because the couple is asking for something instead of just being thankful of whatever is given. On the other hand, it serves the purpose of only getting the essentials, which is why more people are doing the same thing.
There are incidents wherein the newly weds still get the same item perhaps because the guest did not have time to look at the bridal registry. Fortunately, most retailers will allow this to be exchanged for something else.
In fact, some couples have even went to the extent of registering for this online so that guests from out of town can check what gifts can be given for the wedding.
Aside from the usual home appliances that come from the bridal registry, others have decided to also add to the wish list certain things after the wedding. This can be the airfare for the dream honeymoon destination, a guided tour while staying there, a romantic dinner in a fancy restaurant and body care in a spa.
This is considered to be practical given that the couple has already spent so much for the wedding preparations.
Registries are also being done for newborn babies. Instead of those expensive items, toys and accessories are the usual things that parents ask for which will be very useful for the infant.
The wedding registry is simply a wish list. Not all of the items may be given during that special day but most of the items will surely be a big help for those who have decided to start a new life together as husband and wife.

It is my opinion that bridal registries themselves are tackless. I will never register with one.

How To Create A Bridal Registry List
For a newlywed couple to setup a bridal registry list, simply visiting the department store will initiate the process of setting up your bridal registry. Department stores will have designated areas within the store that employees will sit down with you and help you go through a catalogue of items that you request. The next step is to inform your guests of a particular bridal party that you are registered at a specific store, so the guests can go to that department store and select from the list of items you have requested. The nice thing about this is everything is organized.
By sitting the newlywed couple down with a bridal registry store employee, the department store is making notes of what the couple will want the guests to purchase for them at the store. What the department store will then have are machines throughout the store that will provide a printout of the items that the couple as requested you as a guest to buy. Once you have selected that particular item, the item is removed from the list and no one else will be able to purchase, forcing them to have to buy another item on the list.
The great thing about this is you as a gust will not have to worry about buying duplicate items for the newlyweds to be. However, this idea is not fool-proof because there are guests in the bridal party that will not want to go to the department store that the couple has highlighted in the invitation, and it is that way that you may run into buying duplicate items. It is always best to try to adhere to the requests of the bridal registry list that they have put in place.
Question by Maria Wells: Is it tacky to do a bridal registry when renewing vows?
My husband and I have been married for a little over 4 years, and are planning to renew our vows on our 5 year anniversary. We never had a real wedding in the beginning, but have a few family members who sent us gifts anyway. Would it be rude to sign up for a Bridal Registry for the ceremony? I say it would be tacky, but I have some friends saying it’s totally acceptable.
Please advise!!!
Thanks!

Question by Why?: Bridal Registry?
We’re getting married in August of 2008. My fiance and I are very torn when it comes to the bridal registry. We both dislike the idea, but some people have requested that we register in order to get an idea of what we want/need. We ended up registering at two stores with a total of about 10 items in order to satisfy those that would prefer to use a registry to buy gifts. We plan to tell people about the registry ONLY IF THEY ASK. There will be NO notification of the registry in any invitation.
I still feel uneasy about the whole registry thing and am half tempted to delete them. What do you think? Do you agree that they are tacky? OR do you like to have a registry to decrease the stress of gift buying?
By the way, my fiance and I are both 30 and pretty much established. That’s yet another reason that we really didn’t want to register. We both have the basics of what we need…you know, without being greedy.

When handled properly they are great! Nobody wants to spend hours gambling what you want and some people are just uncomfortable with cash. Naturally if we are spending money on gifts we want them to be something desired and not end up rotting in a closet. Registries prevent that….and in some cases save money because if I find a item on sale it looks much better than just handing you the I could afford.
You’ve jumped the hurdle that makes most people think of registries badly by treating them as a helpful tool for guests who ask and not as a “gimmie gimmie” list.
